Weekly Obsessions #5

Japan Edition.

Before I get started, I should mention that I’m writing this from Japan. In fact, that is the very reason I am one week late on this installment, I simply haven’t had an Internet connection. I’ve been here about a week now and this is the first time I’ve been online since. So without further ado, weekly obsessions number five; Japan Eedition.

The Trains
It never ceases to impress me how efficient public transportation is in Japan. You can literally get to just about anywhere by train or bus and the amount of time it takes is extremely decent. It’s no wonder so many people use public transportation here. I really wish San Diego could pick up on this, it would be great not having to constantly rely on filling up that gas tank just to make a few simple stops around the city. But at the moment, it seems most southern Californians still consider public transportation to be something of the “ghetto” spectrum so to speak, or the rare, rare alternative to driving drunk from a ball game. A shame.

Max Coffee
I usually never drink coffee. But this stuff is insane and I think it’s my new addiction. I tried one of these out of a vending machine at a train station near Tokyo. I was expecting a cold coffee beverage, but to my surprise the can was very hot. I popped it open and chugged away. These little bad boys dose out a good buzz for about an hour and I really didn’t notice any type of crash afterwards. Quite the morning kick. I’ll miss this drink once I leave, as they’re not sold in America as far as I know.

Engrish
Okay. If you’ve ever been to Japan, or know a little about the language, you’ll know that Japanese labels and advertisements often use English words. However, due to the inevitable language barrier, you will oftentimes see words used in a manner that would never work in America. This happens so often that there’s even a term for these misconstrued statements; Engrish. Playing off the common confusion between the letter “r” and “l” that most native Japanese people have, the term Engrish refers to all things misinterpreted regarding their use of the English language. I’ve taken a number of photos displaying these Engrish acts. Stick around to see some more humorous examples.

Nadia - Sweeet obsessions. Yeah, I love that too how public transportation is so efficient in Japan. It just feels different there. It was more comfortable and we weren't surrounded by weirdos like on some trolleys and buses here ya know. Since everyone of all age groups use public transportation over there, it just feels more natural and relaxed for sure. Hot coffee out of a vending machine, that's pretty awesome lol. + Super LULZ @ Engrish. Ohh that's got to be one of the funniest parts about Japan in my opinion. Those captions never cease to amuse me. That cream looks neat, I bet it's real useful for horny heels. hahaha.March 18, 2009 - 9:00 pm

Annie - Amazing!!! Glad you guys had fun. Can’t wait to see more. Japan is on my top 5 places i NEED to go. In the mean time I will live vicariously through your guys' trip :DMarch 19, 2009 - 3:54 pm

Kirby - @Nadia: Haha, I forgot about the drunkards and weirdos on SD metropolitan systems, that's so true huh. But yeah, that coffee drink is pretty dang good. Apparently is sells really good here. And don't even get me started on how much Engrish I've encountered here so far. It's ridiculous. I was reading an article that said Engrish here is the equivalent to miswritten Kanji tattoos in the States. It's just here, it's not just tattoos, but signage and packaging as well. Fair enough, haha.

@Annie: Wadup' Annie! Thnx a bunch! I'm glad you're diggin' the words + pics. You'd love Japan for sure. Talk about a double-shot of culture. Nice to see you on the blog.March 19, 2009 - 5:07 pm

Weekly Obsessions #4

Trip to Japan
About a week from today, I’ll be sitting on an airplane. Flying across the pacific ocean towards Japan. I’m really looking forward to everything I’ll be doing and seeing over there. And of course, I’ll be taking plenty of pictures. Stay tuned for more details on Kirby’s upcoming trip to the land of the rising sun.

Facebook
If you’re under 35 and still not on Facebook, consider yourself a part of an elite club who has resisted a widespread temptation of epidemic proportions. You are the wins. But if you are on Facebook, feel free to add me as a friend. It would make me feel really special.

Active Ride Shop
Shout out to Active Ride Shop: Mission Valley for being so helpful on the phone just now. I’m glad they opened up a store nearby, as opposed to only having the option to shop online. Getting stuff same day is great.

Pacific Highway

Some frames from a nice little beach in Carlsbad. Very quiet, a lot of squirrels, and people parked for lunch. The cliffs had an awesome view of the pacific ocean and you can walk down to the sand below. Apparently, it’s quite the spot for locals and tourists.

In other news..

I designed the new Colorati banners on theblogisfound.com, which is the blog of world famous wedding photographers, Nate and Jaclyn Kaiser. These two are really great at what they do and have inspired more than many photographers. I actually saw Nate last week, we exchanged hello’s and intros. He seemed like a cool guy.
