Weekly Obsession #8

Dachshunds
Cute eh? They’re all Dachshunds, pronounced dock-sun and more commonly known as the weiner dog, I’ve been liking this breed lately. I think they’re too cute. The pictures above were taken at a park in Japan. Everyone seemed to have a Dachshund there. If a dog ever gets added to the Kirby household, a Dachshund will have to be on the list of potentials. I just don’t know what I’d name it.

Weekly Obsessions #7

It’s been a little while since I’ve posted. Catching up with the pace back home since getting back from Japan feels good. I’d also like to mention that this will probably be one of the last weekly obsessions post. They’re fun to write, don’t get me wrong. But you’d be surprised how much time they can take.

On with this weeks obsessions.

Handstrap
This was something I had been wanting to get for my camera for months. I finally ordered one before my trip to Japan. I’m very glad I did. If you’re not familiar, a camera handstrap attaches your hand to the camera. Handy if you tend to hold your camera for prolonged periods of time. I went with the Camdapter and definitely like it. It provides great support and takes a lot of weight off the 5D (now MKII) for me. This was great in Japan, I was able to hold my camera for entire afternoons and evenings no problem. It also felt like I could get “the shot” faster, as your hand is already in shooting position. I don’t know what it is, but I don’t really use neckstraps. I end up holding my camera for the majority of the time even when I wear one, so a handstrap was worth investing. If you shoot a lot and prefer having a hold on your camera, I highly recommend checking one of these out.

AdobeRGB vs. sRGB
This one is some serious geekery, you’ve been forewarned. I converted all my workflow software’s color space from AdobeRGB to sRGB. I had been using AdobeRGB for many years. So why the switch? Most web browsers, like Internet Explorer and Firefox, can’t see all the colors AdobeRGB produces. Safari however, the browser I use, happens to be able to see the gamut of AdobeRGB. So I’ve never noticed any difference in my photo’s colors online. It wasn’t until I viewed my blog in Firefox that I discovered the dramatic difference in color. The colors in my photos were less saturated in IE and Firefox, because as it turns out, those browsers can’t see the full range of color in AdobeRGB. Instead, the browsers compensate the best they can, which often isn’t accurate. A lot of color ends up missing. The greens aren’t as green, the blues aren’t as blue, you get the point. According to my blog stats, 80% of the people viewing this blog are using Internet Explorer, which means 80% of my visitors are not seeing my intended photograph colors. (I told you this was serious geekery.) So to fix this issue of inaccurate color, I switched all of my editing software and display settings to the sRGB color space. Now I just add more saturation during editing to compensate any differences. Done and done.

2009 Shoots
Something that’s definitely been on my mind lately is doing some more photo shoots. It’s been such a busy, much changing, year. Finishing college and landing a day job in North County has been a lot of work. But I’m looking forward to being able to provide some new services and a la carte items upon next shoots booked.

Tsuyoshi - And since the sRGB gamut is smaller, it is also closer to CMYK I believe. So when I convert an image to CMYK, my disappointment would be less from sRGB than AdobeRGB. I noticed this simple thing at work. Ease for print work. Check if I'm right by yourself.

Two more things in my mind: 1) Most times, the windows monitor seems to be over-saturated/over-contrasted/over-brightened in comparison to Mac. So sRGB still gets auto-vividified. 2) However, it isn't ideal to keep the fastest mustang in the tourist range only. I hope all other browsers would follow Safari tomorrow and become capable of showing everyone what amazing colors are really possible.

Great posting!! Highly educational! I added a handstrap to my want-list!!April 11, 2009 - 8:27 am

Kirby - @Tsuyoshi: Firstly, thanks for reading. Your note on CMYK is interesting, I'll try that sometime.

I know what you mean about PC monitors vs. the Mac Cinema Displays, the few times I've needed to use a PC monitor for detail-oriented post production, it's been pretty nightmarish. And choosing between sRGB and AdobeRGB has always been somewhat of a dilemma for me. In terms of AdobeRGB online, yes it's definitely a shame Safari is one of the few web browsers that can see AdobeRGB by default. Because very few people use Safari according to my blog stats. In terms of printing, many would argue that sRGB is just fine, because the standard printer can't translate AdobeRGB anyway; again, too many colors.

But I've always had a long-term mentality on this topic. And am confident that all browsers and printers will one day be able to read AdobeRGB just fine, if not a better equivalent. So I've actually kept my in-camera settings to AdobeRGB, seeing as how the final color space data for RAW files is determined by your RAW processing software (I use Bridge CS3 / ACR for that.) I just convert to sRGB in post-processing for now. I like knowing that my true original RAW files are still in AdobeRGB, because it's only a matter of time before we can benefit from that via web and printing. Patience is virtue.

Well, before my reply turns into another post about color spaces, I'll just stop there. Thanks for stoppin' by Tsuyoshi, I always appreciate your visits! And yes, camera handstraps rock! You should get one. :)April 12, 2009 - 7:05 am
